The hand crafted masks are original editions and are life size, light enough to be worn or for purely ornamental purposes.
Each has a different theme either taken from a commissioned request for fictional or mythological characters (midsummer's night dream characters, unicorn, snowqueen, court jester, etc) or a character I want to produce for personal research, for gifts or display.
In the past I have created masks for fancy dress balls, venician mask parades, actors, stage production companies, puppetry.
Once i have a theme I make numerous preparatory sketches of the masks characteristics: features, colouration, details, and (particularly for a commissioned brief) its personality (humorous, happy, sad, mischievous, etc).
The mask begins with a base cast of papier-mâché or layered p.v.a. and newspaper strips. at this 'wet' stage I add parts, extend features or cut away areas.
When I am happy with the masks aesthetics i begin details of painting glitter, gloss, gold leaf, etc and hand sew haberdashery: sequins, ribbon, glass beads, feathers, bells.
The masks can take from two weeks to three months to complete depending on scale technicalities and detail.
